Classical Moves

By Michael S. Gant

FOR THE SECOND in a series of Sunday Showcase concerts, the Silicon Valley Arts Coalition presents a tripartite performance by members of Music@Market, the South Bay Guitar Society and the Palo Alto Philharmonic. The program includes the Music@Market duo of pianist Aileen Chanco (who is the group's artistic director) and cellist Michael Graham performing some Stravinsky (excerpts from Suite Italienne) and Rachmaninov (the Sonata in G Minor).

The South Bay Guitar Society hosts guitarist Michael Bautista, who will showcase selections by Lauro, Bach and Mertz. On behalf of the Palo Alto Philharmonic, the Gyro Quartet (Yi Wang on Piano, Jeannette Biffle on Violin, Geri Actor on Viola and Rachel Zu on cell) will take on Mozart's Piano Quartet no. 1. The show takes place Sunday (Aug. 23) at 3pm at the Theatre on San Pedro Square, 29 N. San Pedro St., San Jose. A $5 donation is suggested.

In other classical news, members of San Jose's Lyric Theater will put on a display Friday (Aug. 21) of light-opera vocal prowess at Caffe Trieste, 319 S. First St., San Jose. The show starts at 8pm and is free; 408.287.0400.
