THE WRECKING CREW: After a long wait, their D-day is finally here: the Silicon Valley Roller Girls' debut bout against the Port City Roller Girls.

Roller Brawl

By Felipe Buitrago

NO FIGHTS AT HP right now? No problem. Why wait for a couple of dudes to go at it when you can catch two teams of women smack each other around on roller skates? This Saturday, Aug. 30, the Silicon Valley Roller Girls will be at San Jose Skate for Hot August Fights, the very first South Bay bout, and the Port City Roller Girls, based out of Stockton, will be their first opponents.

It appears the fruits of mud wrestling, bikini car washes and smacking asses with a paddle—and let's not forget family night dinner—have finally paid off. Almost a year after the debut of the Silicon Valley Roller Girls in the half-time pillow fight spectacle at the Civic Center where the Bay Area Derby Girls were having their bouts, the South Bay ladies now have a league of their own, and this is its debut bout. Interestingly, the Stockton team also has a newly minted league, suggesting roller derby will continue to be all the rage for quite some time.

The all-ages event with car show and beer garden to boot opens its doors at 6pm and starts at 7pm. The Silicon Valley team will be having their monthly recruiting the very next day, Sunday, Aug. 31, at 8pm at San Jose Skate.

HOT AUGUST FIGHTS, the Silicon Valley Roller Girls vs. the Port City Roller Girls, happens Saturday, Aug. 30, at 7pm at San Jose Skate, 397 Blossom Hill Road, San Jose. Tickets are $12 advance/$15 door. For more info go to www.svrollergirls.com or www.myspace.com/svrollergirls.
