Papa Power Papa Roach is ready for the big leagues By Sarah Quelland THE MONTHS OF RECORDING in the studio have served Papa Roach well. The band gave a standout performance last Friday (Feb. 18) at Maritime Hall--probably the best I've ever seen them do. With LIVE 105 sponsoring the $1.05 event, the show brought in a large crowd. Judging from new material, the hip-hop/rock band has really honed its sound and appears to be moving more heavily into the rock & roll arena while still maintaining its hip-hop bounce. These guys really are ready for the big leagues. The band's debut on DreamWorks Records, titled Infest, should be on shelves April 25. Triple Seven put on an energetic show at the Usual last Thursday (Feb. 17). I've said before that the group would do well on a big stage; at this show, the band actually looked cramped on the Usual's stage. The place was pretty packed, too, but then, Triple Seven generally draws well at the Usual. It closed out its set with "Naughty." The band formerly known as RetroMotive (which recently changed its name to Dollstar) opened the show, and All New Smoothies rounded out the night. Insolence was tapped to open the Soul Brains show March 3 at Maritime Hall. It's a Bad Brains reunion with Fitz of Depression and Slightly Stoopid also scheduled to perform. Tickets are $20. ... Lords of Acid perform at Maritime Hall on March 12 with new singer Deborah Ostrega, who replaced Nikkie Van Lierop. Lords of Acid leader Praga Khan's (a.k.a. Maurice Engelen) side project, Praga Khan, and Genaside II open. The ever-popular music festival Reggae on the River will be held Aug. 4-6 at Frenchy's Camp in Piercy, about 200 miles north of San Francisco on Highway 101. This year's event will feature reggae and world artists from Brazil, Chile, Cuba, England, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Mexico and America; the line-up should be announced in May. Tickets disappear very quickly. To get some (there's a limit of four per person and one order per person), send a certified bank check or postal money order (personal checks will be returned) in the amount of $93 per three-day ticket, plus an added $5 service charge on the full order (not per individual ticket), to Reggae on the River, Attn: People, P.O. Box 640, Redway, CA 95560. Include a legible 3-by-5-inch card with your name, address, telephone number and an email address. No orders postmarked before March 1 will be accepted. A limited number of tickets will be released with 2,000 available at $95 and 4,000 available at $125. The $95 tickets will go quickly, so it is suggested that you enclose a separate check for $30 to ensure a purchase at the $125 level if you don't make it in time for the $95 ticket (if you are in time, the $30 check will be returned).
