[whitespace] Winter Rules

Chill out with Electroclash, Dashboard Confessional, Kid Koala, Del, Korn, Box Car Racer, Sigur Ros, Peter Gabriel, Garbage, The Strokes, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, Guns N' Roses, just to name a few

The story goes that it was a mixtape that helped Kid Koala get noticed. He was chauffeuring a couple of Ninjatune label reps around his hometown of Montreal and nonchalantly stuck his tape in the van's tape deck. After a few times through, the Ninja heads asked about the mix playing in a constant loop. Koala claimed it, and the rest is history.

Thanks to CD burners and MP3 players, the cassette tape is quickly joining the 8-track and brick phone in the ranks of extinction. But it enjoyed a long run. For at least a few decades, the mixtape was the most popular way to communicate and share musical tastes. Who doesn't remember staying up late, cueing up songs organized by mood, creating elaborate J-Cards while the spools rolled? The mix CD will never have the same sexy allure as the mixtape. For one thing, the cassette tape fit in the palm of your hand--true intimacy. For another, a tape survived being tossed caseless into a backpack. And if a tape broke, you could fix it yourself, with a pencil or scotch tape. You could rerecord it as many times as needed. In short, the mixtape put the pop in populist.

In celebration of old-school roots, we offer up the 2002 Winter Music Guide, a compilation of our favorite music, venue by venue, that's headed this way over the next few months. We take a look at the best shows to keep you warm--hot tours like Dashboard Confessional, Kid Koala, Del the Funky Homosapien, Korn and the Strokes. Highly anticipated shows by newcomers Box Car Racer and Sigur Ros. Rockers that get sexy on that ass like Electroclash and Garbage. And we make mention of the old guard--Peter Gabriel, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith and the return of Axl and the Roses, er, Guns N' Roses (coming to San Jose on New Year's Eve!). Plus, we offer a mini-mixtape of songs you need to hear.

Also on the old-school tip, Jim Harrington remembers 15 years of the Bridge School Benefit Concerts--Northern California's most anticipated rock & roll event. Gina Arnold explores the American Idol phenomenon. And Sarah Quelland and Todd Inoue find out how downtown club trends are moving toward vinyl satisfaction.

So plug in new batteries, punch up the volume and press play. There's heat, beat and a lot to move your feet this coming season.
