UV: Are you an East Bay native? If not where did you come from and what drew you here?
DM: I moved here in 1988 from Ann Arbor, Michigan. Great town, but they don't have any mountains or coastline nearby.

UV: What were you thinking when you made this cover piece?
DM: I was glad the windows had been washed recently!

UV: How often do you make work?
DM: Every week, if not more. Less than that and I'd better sell my cameras.

UV: Tell us about your method.
DM: I head out the door with about 40 pounds of gear and film, and follow my nose. Early mornings are best.

UV: Do you conceptualize a piece beforehand or give reign to spontaneity?
DM: I do both, but I think my best images are made after brief consideration. If I have to try too hard, there's probably nothing there.
