UV: Where was this photo taken?
MS: This photo was taken in the outskirts of Nanjing, China, in a migrant worker area known as JiYu Village.

UV: Do you feel like a participant or an observer when you photograph your subjects?
MS: I always feel like an observer. This photo is different, since the child was just as interested in observing me, as I was him.

UV: Between photojournalism and fine art, where does the line blur, for you?
MS: That line is becoming finer and finer. Photojournalism is starting to appear more frequently in galleries and museums. I switched from conceptual photography to photojournalism because I felt the message of postmodern art was either narcissistic or contrived.

UV: What would be your ideal subject to photograph?
MS: Anything that is epic both in social and visual terms. Globalization is taking this world in a strange new direction, and I believe that there are going to be some astounding changes in the next few decades.

UV: What impact do you hope your photographs will have on the community?
MS: I hope that I can make a difference. Everyday there are absolutely amazing things happening, and I would like to show people these things in a very creative and enticing way.
