UV: What inspired you to create the image on the cover?
JC: Well, the picture is based on a photo that I found on the internet. So, I guess I was drawn to the photo immediately. I like her pose. It's sort of alert but artificial. Definitely a pose. And in the photo she has this funny, intent look on her face which I didn't really capture. She's this charismatic looking girl, all mysterious and wild.
UV: Who or what is the girl about to blow away?
JC: I don't think that she's really gonna shoot anyone just now. I think that she's just posing. I went to where I found the picture but it just said 'My army days,' so she is in the army ...
UV: Describe your process. Do you start executing your ideas on the computer or do you start with traditional sketches?
JC: I drew it just on the computer. The idea behind it is that mundane words can be used to produce these interesting images. For this picture I looked up the word 'rain' and found this photo on the sixth page, first row, third column. That's why I was gonna call it rain6a3. But I think I've settled on girlgun, cause it's a girl with a gun and that's how I saved it. Um! So, I pulled the image into Illustrator and went over the lines that I wanted to emphasize. Basically, I traced it!
UV: How do you think your process effects the final image?
JC: I think that it makes it totally different. Stuff gets lost, like the original expression on her face. But things can change in good and interesting ways, too. It's definitely stylized and I kinda dig the colors. Shoot, now it's my picture. The original photo has a sort of delicacy to it,there's a net on her helmet, the bushes look sort of brittle, it's in black and white, it's a photo! This one is bolder. It's in color, and solid colors at that. The detail is all in her. I'm pretty sure the gun is totally inaccurate. And it's a drawing so I choose how it looks. If she's holding a gun or whatever.
UV: If you could create your own female super hero who would she be, what superpowers would she have, and why?
JC: Aw, shoot! I dunno, she'd be something like that chick from the Flash Gordon movie. Powers? All the powers! 'Cause every superhero has some lame flaw, but not my girl.
