UV: Who or what are your biggest influences?
GC: At the root of my art lies my experience of growing up in New Jersey, a state laden with industry and all of its side effects.
UV: What's the best place for inspiration in the Bay Area?
GC: I like the quiet industrial neighborhoods of Oakland and Richmond, as well as the old war ships docked in and around Richmond for inspiration and ideas.
UV: Tell us about your method.
GC: I like to photograph at night (though not exclusively) using various types of slide film at long exposures. This technique causes some colors to shift and brings out color relationships and color contrasts that we normally can't see or do not notice.
UV: How do you view Oakland/East Bay in the national art scene?
GC: The East Bay has the potential to be influential on the national art scene due to its tremendously high concentration of artists and lack of a cut-throat anti value system, but it must become more unified with itself.
UV: Do you conceptualize a piece beforehand or give rein to spontaneity?
GC: When I paint I conceptualize and plan a lot. When I photograph I am a lot more free in my methods, responding to my environment more intuitively.
UV: Does anything limit your art? What must you do to overcome these limitations?
GC: The need for money and lack of free time due to this unfortunate fact is the biggest limitation to my art. I always try to find the cheapest and best ways to accomplish any given task.
