WRITING ON THE WALL: Brazilian graffiti artist PJOTA opens a retrospective at Anno Domini this Friday.
First Fridays
By Michael S. Gant
A VERY BUSY weekend is shaping up for downtowners as San Jose hosts the annual Jazz Festival and the monthly art happening known as First Friday. All along South First Street, just a marimba's toss away from the jazz stage in Plaza de Cesar Chavez, galleries and museum will open their doors for receptions, music and mingling. As a bonus, the Jazz Festival will place its Jazz Beyond stage in the middle of the DIY Street Market outside Anno Domini Gallery, with performances by Midival Punditz (8pm) and Panthelion (10pm). Serious collectors will also want to check out the vinyl record swap and sale—proof that there's more to life than MP3 files.
For First Friday, Anno Domini opens Walking the White, a show by Brazilian artist and graffitist PJOTA, who has fashioned some oversized canvases about his trek from South America to California. Minimalists Shudder will provide a live soundtrack for the reception. Nearby, Caffé Trieste hosts a reception for Fables, Stories and Far-off Place, featuring paintings and prints by Woody Miller.
Down the street, the San Jose Museum of Quilts & Textiles celebrates two new shows—Fabric Tattoos: The Spirit of the Mola and The World According to Joyce Gross. Christopher Agostino will be on hand at the museum to paint visitors' faces. Slave Labor Graphics presents pieces by cartoon and comics artists saluting the Jazz Festival; Slab Yard will perform. In keeping with the theme, South First Billiards will offer a jazz jam and live-art event. And don't forget to stop by the Metro lobby at 550 S. First St., for a show of local photographers, with music at 7pm by Suicidal Barfly.
FIRST FRIDAYS takes places all evening on Friday (Aug. 7) in downtown San Jose. See www.southfirstfridays.com for details.
