Don't believe what you read in Newsweek and Time about women having no voice on the Net. At least not since geekgirl went online early this year. A quarterly web zine edited by Aussie geekgirl rosie x (AKA Rosie Cross), geekgirl (the zine) "hopes to get the low down on cyberlife and what it takes to be a geek these days." It also delves into the "problems some geekgirls face on-line." Each issue is chock full of thoughtful pieces on electronic witches, "virtual sisters," digital artists, plus interviews with "cyber-feminists" like St. Jude, Dale Spender, and Sadie Plant. But geekgirl isn't gynocentric; there are also plenty of interviews with the likes of Bill "Schwa" Barker and Noam Chomsky. I hate to end this capsule review with a borderline sexist remark, but. . . the design is a knockout: lots of lovely lavender and purple backgrounds. (JW)
