Sugar Alternatives

By Stett Holbrook

Not everyone is sweet on white sugar. Here are five sugar alternatives.

Agave syrup For every cup of sugar called for in a recipe, you only need one-third of a cup of agave syrup. The honeylike syrup is made from the same plant from which tequila is distilled.

Honey In addition to replacing sugar, honey is also said to help heal and disinfect wounds.

Maple Syrup Global warming is believed to be reducing the supply of maple syrup, so enjoy it while it lasts.

Molasses Sweet and full of essential minerals, too.

Stevia Can't be used for baking over 400 degrees but is great for any other use. It's 300 times sweeter than sugar so use sparingly.
