B.A.N.D.

Seeing holes in the fabric of a community and working to mend them is the sign of a real community leader, of someone who lives out Berkeley's pervasive bumper-sticker sentiment "Think Globally, Act Locally" to its fullest. The Bay Area has two dwellers worthy of newfound praise in this department. Bookers Dani Eurynome (Stork Club, bEASTfest, Berkeley Slam) and Jocelyn Kane (Voodoo Lounge, Popular Noise Foundation) are offering up the wisdom of years in a single afternoon to the people who need it most: musicians. B.A.N.D. (Booking and other Necessary Details) is a series of workshops aimed at educating bands and performers in how to connect with and sustain good working relationships with bookers. The first (and most elementary) workshop, "Working with Bookers," begins this Sunday. So whether you're an El Cerrito garage- band teen hoping to follow in the footsteps of Metallica, do PR for a local indie label, or just want to get a little airplay, Dani and Jocelyn have all the answers (and connections). Raise your finger to the corporatization of music and get by with a little help from some friends.

Sun/13, 5pm. The Stork Club, 2330 Telegraph, Oakl. $2. 435.1665. (LS)

Know Jazz

Know Jazz are players in a soul destiny.

Know Jazz

The band Know Jazz is a hidden talent right here in the Bay Area. They challenge R&B/jazz stereotypes by bringing a unique sound that is soulful, bluesy, and funky. Ocea Savage formed the band back in 1994 while collaborating with drummer Andre Preston. Savage touches on many different avenues in the music industry; credits include his work with two esteemed rap legends, Eric "Eazy E" Wright and Tupac Shakur. Their new album Soul Destiny can be picked up at the performance. Expect the band to bring multi-faceted styles and guests to the stage from vocalists to lyricists to saxophonist Rici Ric alternating between two instruments at the same time. Check these artists out as they display a true love for cutting-edge music.

Thurs/10, 9pm. Mingles Lounge, 370 Embarcadero, Oakl. $10. 835.3900; www.knowjazz.homestead.com. (GS)

The Great Ball of Fire

We know, we know. Not battling amnesia, not taking backdoor "donations"; Urbanview has decided to risk redundancy and open the door to accusations of favoritism. The Crucible just went and hit us with its best shot (twice in one month) and hosts yet another event that demands preference. To celebrate its third Capricorn birthday, the Crucible (the axis mundi of fire, communism, and art) is throwing a masquerade ball fusing all the excitement of Mardi Gras and Carnaval on an otherwise uneventful mid-January Saturday night. Over 2,500 masked revelers will walk straight into a fiery mayhem and greet the dawn amidst a swirling phantasm of wicked fire performers, belly dancers, snake charmers, trapeze artists, molten bronze pourers, and live music (including Bonfire Madigan, DJ Vordo, and Keith Hennesey and Circo Zero). Advice: play out your inner-anything in costume for the midnight unmasking.

Sat/12, 8pm-dawn. The Crucible. 1036 Ashby, Berk. $45 advance, $50 door. 843.5511. (EP)

Hydeus Kiatta

Grounded in tradition, Kiatta goes deep.

Hydeus Kiatta

Smooth but moody, Hydeus Kiatta presents a multi-dimen-sional sound that blends into a combination of R&B, jazz, folk, and world music. As a local, Kiatta has been performing for the last three years around the Bay Area. She is a label mate with world-renowned bassist/ composer Marcus Shelby of San Francisco's Noir Records. Kiatta's solo debut, On the Ground I Walk, is laced with worldly and folk traditions that give the album a warm essence. The title track has a reggae feel, however it still evokes its jazz roots; a combination of influences that reflect the diversity of Kiatta's vocals and songwriting. Naturally, Kiatta's gift for music has brought her around the world where she has received much esteem. All types appre-ciate her music, for it does not stick to one form. Find some time for Kiatta this weekend at Jupiter, she'll stir your emotions.

Sat/12, 8pm. Jupiter Brewery, 2181 Shattuck, Berk. Free. 843.8277; www.noirrecords.com. (GS)

Picks by Erica Pedersen (EP), Leigh Saffold (LS) and Gabriel Serpa (GS).
