That dirty dog Jack's back.

Carnal Knowledge
This 1971 satire, directed by Mike Nichols from a tart script by Jules Feiffer, traces the sexual and romantic exploits of two buddies from the saddle-shoe 1950s through the fringe-vest '70s. Jack Nicholson is his usual force-of-nature self as Jonathan, an unscrupulous lady-killer with a mile-wide streak of upfront misogyny. For him, women are "ballbusters" to be conquered, not coddled. When his solipsistic self-worship is threatened, he'll run for the shower. Or, as when girlfriend Cindy (a voluptuous, Oscar-nominated Ann-Margret) demands marriage, he'll shift into volcanic rage: "I'm already taken by me!" Crooner Art Garfunkel ably plays best pal Sandy, a sensitive nebbish who knows better but still does his worst to get laid. Mike Nichols lets the camera linger in static long takes, alternating between tight shots of one character yammering on about delusional theories of the opposite sex (eerily recalling the photo-booth confessional asides of MTV's "Real World") and another character silently reacting to a variety of icky, sticky situations. The effect is mannered and smug, but it gives full flush to the men-are-pigs misanthropy of Feiffer's cringe-inducing dialogue.

John Trudell has a bone to pick.
Bone Days
John Trudell is the real deal. He is a musical poet, or a poetic musician, or both, but always an artistic seeker of what it is to be human, not just Native American. His music is a haunting and humorous mix of steady rock and blues, Native American instrumentation, and lyrical spoken word. Angelina Jolie, exe- cutive producer of his latest album Bone Days, says she believes in his message and wants people to hear it. Indigo Girl Amy Ray released it on her indie label Daemon Records. And Bob Dylon called Trudell's 1986 debut album AKA Graffiti Man the best album of the year. What a special night tonight is, then: Trudell and his Bad Dog Band will kick off their West Coast tour right here in Berkeley. Expect surprise guests before the show, and reggae, tribal, and global beats spun by Roots and Branches Sound System between sets. Speakers will include poet Tom Le Blanc, Leonard Benally from Dine Resistors, and Arlene Hamilton from Women in Resistance. The event will be a benefit for Indigenous Free Radio. Get tickets in advance -- or pronto today -- at either Cody's in Berkeley.
Wed/13, 7:30pm. Florence Schwimly Little Theater on the Berkeley High Campus, 1930 Allston, Berk. $18. 845.7852; 707.479.5470. (EP)
Eggster Hunt
With kids hooting and hollering over the Easter Bunny, a grandiose egg hunt should satisfy their expect-ations for the holiday. The eighth annual Eggster Hunt & Learning Festival will provide egghunts, cultural performances, educational booths, arts, and crafts, plus games and entertainment. Even if you don't have any kids, with more than 4,000 youngsters in attendance, you can sneak into the celebration undetec-ted. Eggster is a nonprofit organization comprised of UC Berkeley students who hold the event in order to raise monies for Bay Area children's agencies. Make sure you don't miss the most important part of the day: seeing hoards of five- and six-year-olds romping with baskets through the grass with faces of glee and enthusiasm. If you can't make the festival, keep your fingers crossed for sunshine!
Sat/16, 10am-3pm (rain or shine). West entrance to the UC Berkeley campus, one block east of the Downtown Berkeley BART station. Free. www.eggster.org. (GS)
Oh Danny boy!
Venerating St. Patty
Although Ireland's patron saint himself traditionally requested green attire for revelers and pinches for naysayers, ignoring this custom will provide quite a few more opportunities for flirting. The hot spots for this Sunday's celebration will have plenty of Guinness Stout on tap and Irish Whisky on the shelves. But if you're the type who likes to get reverent before the pubs even open their doors, enjoy the day with friends and frisbees in the park or cozied up on the couch if it's raining. A great party trick involves the successful layering of Guinness and Harp for an Irish original: the Black & Tan in true fashion. Or, much easier to concoct than the Black & Tan, drop a shot of Bailey's into a pint of Guinness to create the tasty, milk-shaky Car Bomb. When the evening finally progresses to the pubs, your careful selection should depend on the surfeit of taps or the songs of the crowd. Beckett's Irish Pub and Jupiter on Shattuck are sure bets for hearty grub and solid suds, as well as either (or both) Barclay's -- on College Avenue or in Jack London Square. The Starry Plough is throwing a traditional St. Patrick's celebration with corned beef and cabbage, Irish dancers and live bagpipers, and the Irish music band Chameleon to help you get your jig on. Cheers to all on this festive holiday.
