True aural hallucinogens.

Listings to plan your week by

Mushroom

Absorb the tunes of Mushroom at Jupiter for two more Thursdays in March. Mushroom has taken position as Jupiter's resident band offering their psychedelic sounds for the month. Mushroom mixes unconventional instruments such as flute, trumpet, trombone, and electronic sound effects among others. Recently, the band released their all-instrumental album Foxy Music. Performing since 1997, they honed their blues-rock-funk music on the other side of the Bay, and now the East Bay has finally gotten a hold of Mushroom. At a bar with no cover, all Jupiter requires of you is to enjoy some tunes, down some beers, and relish the chills of outdoor seating.

Thurs/21, 8pm. Jupiter Brewery, 2181 Shattuck, Berk. 843.7625 (THE.ROCK); www.jupiterbeer.com. (GS)

Susan Kingsley artwork

A techie-aesthete speaks.

Susan Kingsley

Getting an artist to share their secrets is not always an easy task, so when the Crucible presents a free artist lecture, plan to be in attendance. The Crucible is a nonprofit foundation in Berkeley that provides resources and education in the industrial and fine arts. This week they are presenting a free lecture on metalsmithing and postmodern alchemy by sculptor and technical art writer Susan Kingsley. Her work, much of which deals perversely with desire and culture, has been exhibited nationally and is represented in a collection at the Oakland Museum; her recent projects have focused on using a hydraulic press to transform metal. The evening's lecture will focus on reconstructing the definition of art.

Sun/24, 6:30pm. The Crucible, 1036 Ashby, Berk. 843.5511; www.thecrucible.org. (GS)

The Supplicants

Whew, this stuff is good. I can almost smell the sultry incense. The Supplicant's Kosmic-Afro-Indian-Jazz is exotically rhythmic, clean, eclectic, and unpredictable. In just a few measures, vast unknown soundscapes open up, tinkled with David Boyce's clarinet trills and extended with Richard Howell's long pensive tones on the sax. With soft hands and an easy sense of rythym, Sameer Gupta, a genius on the drums, adds a tackity-tack-tack jazz beat with rushes of an Eastern aesthetic. David Ewell rounds it all out on his acoustic bass, and does it so well he's one of San Francisco's most sought after bassists. All four bring experience and vision to Yoshi's stage this Monday as part of a series Jazz in Flight holds there every month. A presenting organization, Jazz in Flight promotes and encourages local Bay Area talent to take risks and form inventive alliances. With all the improv and innovation coming to the stage, Gupta sees it as a set up of "doors through which people can realize themselves." Music as moment, music as process, who knows what your presence in the audience might spark.

Mon/25, 8 and 10pm. Yoshi's Jazz House, Washington and Embarcadero, Jack London Square, Oakl. $8-$10. 238.9200; www.yoshis.com. (EP)

Bring Your Own Big Wheels

B.Y.O.B.W. to Door.7.Gallery.

Bring Your Own Big Wheels

For one week only -- March 26 through 30 -- there will be an installation like no other by Jon Brumit at Door.7.Gallery. It's called Bring Your Own Big Wheels, and although the name pretty much sums up the subject matter, it's sure to be an unforgettable show. Come celebrate this new angle on the artworld Saturday at Door.7. There will be live music from the jingletron, Tennis Ball Server, and the Drum Helmat Duel, along with other special performances throughout the evening. And to top it all off, there will be an Easter Sunday Big Wheel race in San Francisco starting at 4pm at the top of Lombard. So dust off your mulit-colored plastic tricycles, bicycle helmets, and knee pads and get down to Door.7 Saturday.

Tues/26-Sun/31. Sat/30, 6-9pm. Door.7.Gallery, 2316 Telegraph, Oakl. 763.6494. (AL)

Picks by Aimee Le Duc (AL), Erica Pedersen (EP), and Gabriel Serpa (GS).
