Billy Wilder

Mr. Wilder, a classic in his own right.

Kiss Me, Billy

The Pacific Film Archive is celebrating the work of the late great Billy Wilder with a showing of four of his funniest and most innovative comedies. What perfect timing after a tragic summer of movie going full of heaping mounds like Cameron Diaz in "The Sweetest Thing" or Martin Lawrence's cry for help, "Runteldat." From "The Apartment" to "One, Two, Three," Wilder's comedies are actually funny and haven't lost their acid tongued potency in 40 years. On Friday night, Wilder's all time comedy classic, "Some Like it Hot" plays on a double bill with "Kiss Me, Stupid," a sex comedy starring Dean Martin as himself in all his whiskey- soaked glory. For pop culture geeks looking for some fresh trivia for their arsenal, "Kiss Me, Stupid," features Ray Walston (Mr. Hand of "Fast Times At Ridgemont High" and TV's "My Favorite Martian") as an obsessive piano teacher whose wardrobe consists of famous composer sweatshirts. Whether you're a devotee of the cult of Jack Lemmon or have a soft spot for Shirley MacLaine of yester-year, you won't be disappoin-ted. There's even a bonus: You can finally see a James Cagney movie and stop lying to people.

Fri/30-Sun/31, 7 pm and 9:20pm. The Pacific Film Archive, 2575 Bancroft Way, Berk. 642-5249. $4.50 - $7. (DC)

Amazing Art Amazing Art : Wonders of the Ancient World by Christopher Berg.

Amazeing Art: Wonders of the Ancient World

Growing up as a young child did you ever have an interest in mazes or puzzles? Were you an expert at solving them? Or were you in the larger percentage of people who became so frustrated with them that you gave up all hope and abandoned them forever? Regardless of which category best suits you, you should still head over to Dr. Comics and Mr. Games when they host Christopher Berg and his large collection of mazes and labyrinths. Christopher Berg is a rather fascinating and unique individual. A former astronomer who, interestingly enough, traveled across the U.S. in a motorcycle with only a jar of peanut butter, Berg's interest in mazes launched in the fifth grade. But his interest in creating mazes of ancient architectural wonders didn't begin until he traveled to Greece while in college. That eventually led Berg to the creation of his book, Amazing Art: Wonders of the Ancient World, which contains 34 mazes of Egyptian colossi, Roman ruins, Greek temples, and other ancient wonders, and has been recommended by the Archaeological Institute of America. Berg has also written about the analysis of unusual stellar objects from an international quasar survey for the Astrophysical Journal and several articles on the future of alternative fuel vehicles. At the Oakland event Berg will cover his book, give tips on how to solve mazes, and offer insight into what their hidden meanings may be.

Sat/ 31, 3 - 5pm. Dr. Comics and Mr. Games, 4014 Piedmont Ave., Oakl. Free. 601.7800. (JW)

The Deep Dickcollective

The Deep Dickcollective plays the "Peace Out-World HomoHop Festival" as part of Pride.

2002 East Bay LGBTI Pride Festival

The East Bay's largest Lesbian, Gay, Bi, and Transgender event will draw crowds of over 10,000 this Saturday at downtown's Ogawa Plaza, and no small amount at any of its cap- illary events happening all over town. This Thursday, catch "A Poetic Experience," or the LGBT Elder Conference. Thursday night, don't miss the East Bay Hoedown for two-steppin' gender bendin'. Sleep it off, and get ready for a Festival Friday night. Do it mellow with a second version of "A Poetic Experience," or go "Soundbombing" with Crookedletta at the Oakland Metro (1pm-4pm, and 10pm). On Saturday, Civic Center will be sprawling with over 100 community and artisan booths, sidewalk cafe food courts, street entertainers, and scattered beverage gardens for getting tipsy under the sun. Bringing it all together will be four tented concert stages: the Women's Music Amphitheatre, The peaceOut Homohop Stage, the Queer Alternative Stage, and the Latin/House music tent, with Bay Area musicians of all bents filling the day with sound. If drinking and eating under the sun doesn't do it for you, take a jog around Lake Merritt with the East Bay FrontRunners at 9am (they'll still be setting up the amps at the Plaza, maybe you can hit both). But Pride doesn't end at 6pm when the Civic Center party does; the Crookedletta BE HomoHop contingent takes it to the Oakland Metro at 9pm Saturday ($10 door) to keep it going into Sunday.

Th/29, Fri/30, Sat/31, various times and locations. Civic Center Plaza. 14th and Broadway, Oakl. $5. www.eastbaypride.com.

Picks by D.P. Cogan (DC), Erica Pedersen (EP), and Jamal Wynn (JW).
