.Squirrel Nut Zippers Jam at Guild Theatre

The Squirrel Nut Zippers specialize in hot jazz, a high-energy blend of blues, ragtime and marches rooted in prewar New Orleans. In the 1990s, Katharine Whalen and Jimbo Mathus formed the group near Chapel Hill, North Carolina, never expecting to find the motley crew of musician-neighbors that joined them to rehearse in the farmhouse they were renovating. They named their band after an old-fashioned candy bar and, before they knew it, had a hit called “Hell” on the radio. Their latest album, Lost Songs of Doc Souchon, features a collaboration with Andrew Bird, who was once a Squirrel Nut Zipper himself.
