Thee Sinseers give us a lesson in regional music history, drawing their inspiration from the post-World War II meshing of Chicano and Black communities in East LA. They fuse a cornucopia of genres from that prosperous time and place—mariachi, boleros, R&B. With ample doo-wops, horns and band leader Joey Quiñones’ soulful falsetto, the band brings vintage Southern California into the present. As the good folks of NPR’s Tiny Desk report, their original songs evoke “memories of lowrider car shows and lazy Sunday afternoons.”

Addie Mahmassani is a poet based in Santa Cruz. She holds a PhD in American Studies from Rutgers University-Newark and is currently an MFA student in creative writing at San Jose State University. There, she is a Teaching Associate as well as the lead poetry editor of Reed Magazine, California's oldest literary journal. She also surfs, sings and loves a part-sheepdog named Lou.
