Once Upon a Mattress opened in 1959. It’s an adaptation of a Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale, The Princess and the Pea, with music by Mary Rodgers and lyrics by Marshall Barer. The story takes place in a kingdom where shy but feisty Princess Winnifred wants to marry Prince Dauntless, but only if she passes a test designed by conniving Queen Aggravain, which involves sleeping on a pea placed underneath a stack of mattresses. Carol Burnett made the role famous and received a Tony nomination. This production features students ages 8 to 14 from local performing arts organization Children’s Musical Theater.
