Under the stage name The Weeknd, Abel Makkonen Tesfaye began releasing music on YouTube in 2009. Quite quickly, however, his hedonistic, drug-laced songs, accentuated by his incredible tenor voice, gained a following. Now, over a decade later, The Weeknd is one of the biggest pop stars on earth. He’s sold over 75 million records, won four Grammy Awards, and a whopping 20 Billboard Music Awards. His opener, Playboi Carti, isn’t green behind the ears either. Carti’s pioneering brand of music has resulted in Billboard chart-topping releases and considerable influence over the music and fashion industry at large.
