Among the most original and appealing artists to come out of the ’90s alternative rock scene, North Carolina–born Ben Folds combined superb songcraft, razor-sharp wit, and a bratty sensibility in the music he made leading Ben Folds Five (a trio, by the way). Folds’ “punk rock for sissies” captured the zeitgeist of an era, and he did it without guitars. Folds eventually launched a solo career, and in doing so, built upon the foundation he had established, adding even more wit and sophistication. Today, Folds takes multiple approaches: band-format, backed by an orchestra, and solo piano. This date features the latter.
