Coming out of Berkeley in the early ’70s, the Motels paid their dues. They landed a deal with Capitol by the end of the decade. The band’s third album proved the charm: helped by MTV video airplay, All Four One climbed to the #15 spot on Billboard’s album chart. Critics were enthusiastic as well. 1983’s Little Robbers spawned the hit single “Suddenly Last Summer,” which made it to the top ten. The new wave band’s initial run ended in the late ’80s, with lead singer Martha Davis going on to a solo career. By the end of the century, Davis had reactivated the Motels, releasing occasional albums and touring regularly
