The Color Purple and Ghost aside, Whoopi Goldberg’s greatest performance was in 1992’s Sister Act as Deloris Van Cartier, a Reno lounge singer, who, after witnessing a mob hit ordered by her boyfriend, goes into hiding by joining a convent and leading the nuns’ choir. Like any popular movie, the story was adapted into a 2006 musical, which was nominated for five Tony awards and featured Goldberg herself reprising the role in the West End. Directed by Tressa Bender, this production by the Sunnyvale Community Players stars actors Mercedes Dawnte Long, Jessica Lubke, Mark Anthony Alexander and Matt Regan. Performances go until May 3.
