CHRIS SHIFLETT officially became a big deal when he was picked by Dave Grohl to replace fired guitarist Franz Stahl in the Foo Fighters in 1999. But here in San Jose, he was already known as part of the popular homegrown punk band No Use for a Name. Apparently, his abrupt departure put the local boys in a tight spot, and I always wondered how they took it. Obviously not too bad, since Shiflett will be joining NUFAN frontman Tony Sly for this acoustic set at Blank Club. Personally, I think Shiflett’s crowning achievement is writing the guitar arrangements that allowed his superband side project Me First and the Gimme Gimmes to turn musical numbers like “Don’t Cry for Me Argentina” into punk tunes for their second album. From what I hear, it was kind of a bitch. But the result was maybe the best cover album of all time—pure punk genius.
CHRIS SHIFLETT & TONY SLY perform an acoustic show on Friday (Feb. 12) at 9pm at the Blank Club, 44 S. Almaden Ave., San Jose. Tickets are $10/$12. (408.29.BLANK)
