Dead Boys in San Jose

Sex Pistols, the Clash and the Damned are all punk pioneers, but they don’t deserve all the credit for launching punk. Back on this side of the Atlantic, raw, in-your-face punk was roaring out of cities like New York City, Detroit and Cleveland. The Dead Boys’ ’77 single debut, “Sonic Reducer,” sounds as edgy and unhinged today as it did then. Albums like 1977’s Young, Loud and Snotty and the very un-P.C. We Have Come for Your Children (1978) signaled that the Dead Boys were not a family-friendly act. Today, founding lead guitarist Cheetah Chrome leads the group.
