Founded in San Jose in 1980, Abhinaya Dance Company has educated multiple generations of dancers in classical South Indian dance. Draupadi—The Unsung Warrior explores the life and symbolic meaning of Draupadi, a central female character in the ancient epic Mahabharata from Hindu mythology. As a power struggle ensues between two branches of a royal family, Bharatanatyam dance and Carnatic music create “an eclectic mix of percussion and melody” to further the narrative so fundamental to Indian culture and poetry. This all-age cast comprises Abhinaya’s company dancers.
