San Jose Jazz Winter Fest returns, running Feb. 14-25 this year. The cooler cousin of the blazing hot SJZ Summer Fest features a strong lineup of traditionalists and boundary-bending rabble rousers. Here are just a few of this year’s acts.
Tiffany Austin
Feb 15, Café Stritch
This vocalist, who plays in the same szina Simone and Ella Fitzgerald, earned a law degree from UC Berkeley before turning away from the courtroom to pursue a career in music. She’ll perform with top-drawer Bay Area players Leon Joyce (drums), Marcus Shelby (bass) and Adam Shulman (piano).
The Rad Trads
Feb 15, Art Boutiki
New York’s Rad Trads take on the contradiction of their name head-on with a blend of Americana, folk, rock and soul. It’s all powered by a purely democratic scheme of five players, each one of them a lead vocalist.
Richie Goods
Feb 16, Café Stritch
Fans of the stand-up jazz bass will want to stand up and take notice of Pittsburgh’s Richie Goods, a young phenom whose band showcases his love for funk and gospel rhythms.
La Dame Blanche
Feb 23 Art Boutiki
Cubana singer Yaite Rodriguez took on the stage name La Dame Blanche and with it, she embraced a vibrant, ever-surprising blend of cumbia, hip-hop, reggae and dancehall for a show not designed for sitting but for dancing.
SJZ Collective: Mingus
Feb 23, Café Stritch
Traditionalists rejoice. Six of the South Bay’s finest musicians (including guitarist Hristo Vitchev, organist Brian Ho and drummer Wally Schnalle) come together to explore the legacy of the often misunderstood genius Charles Mingus.
