In 2016, a quartet of prodigiously talented vocalists—Vaughn Faison, Gabe Kunda, J.E. McKissic and Jamall Williams—got together as Kings Return. The acapella group became a viral sensation with videos posted on social media. Rather than using a soundstage or studio, Kings Return harnessed the sonic qualities of building stairwells to imbue their resonant all-vocal arrangements with natural reverb. After debuting with the 2017 EP Merry Little Christmas, the group continued to develop their blend of gospel and secular sounds. The group’s 2022 album Rove earned the group a Grammy nomination for best arrangement, instrumental or acapella.
