It was the pop provocateur’s passing of the torch, by letting Britney Spears open the 2003 MTV VMAs (the 20th anniversary of the awards show) with a wedding dress-laden performance of “Like a Virgin.” Madonna then came on stage to sing with Spears, only to surprise the audience with a steamy kiss with the pop star. Oh, and Christina Aguilera was somewhere on stage too.
