Cuban-born author Carmen Agra Deedy has written nine children’s books, including 2007’s Martina the Beautiful Cockroach, a story based on a Cuban folktale about a 21-day-old cockroach named Martina Josefina Catalina Cucaracha, who wants to get married. Martina looks for a suitor, including a pig, lizard, rooster and mouse, with help from her grandmother, who gives her advice about finding a husband that involves passing a “coffee test.” Children from the Peninsula Youth Theatre, which offers theater education to local youth ages 4 to 20, perform in this production, followed by a live talk with the cast.
