Ren Geisick’s new album opens with “Don’t Start Telling Me the Truth,” a charming yet heartbreaking track that reminisces about how love starts sweet and slowly, but surely, fades to ruin. The lyrics and melody are downcast, but Geisick’s dulcet tones shine through, supported by soft electric guitar noodling and piano twinkles. It’s a great opening to a fantastic album from this Los Gatos native, putting Geisick’s talents and delicate country sensibilities on full display. Originally a jazz musician, Geisick made a slow but organic switch to country, harkening back to classic Opry sounds without feeling derivative. The release of her new album, The Place I Planned To Go, is a testament to an original voice on the rise.
