1997 was a simpler time. It was the year South Park first premiered, invading our tube televisions with fart jokes, long before they would take on a presidency. It was the same year Orange County was the epicenter for the third wave of ska with bands like Sublime, No Doubt, The Aquabats, Reel Big Fish and The Hippos. That year also saw the release of It Means Everything, the debut album by ska musicians Save Ferris, and it was a life-changing album. Once the opening track, “The World is New,” started playing, it was a new world for many kids—one that would lead them skanking down the path for years to come.
