The Birmingham, Alabama-based band chosen to perform on the very first episode of The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, St. Paul & The Broken Bones, is truly something special. Paul Janeway has a gorgeous, full voice perfect for their brand of danceable soul. His voice can handle the pressure of fronting a lush eight-piece outfit, including a trio of horns, but is also suited to his pared-down guitar numbers featuring introspective, deeply personal lyrics. Since 2012, they’ve built an international following as they’ve presented a look at, and a listen to, the alternative culture of their deep southern, bible belt state.
