Composed by Cy Coleman, with lyrics by Dorothy Fields and book by Neil Simon, Sweet Charity premiered on Broadway in 1966. The musical follows Charity Hope Valentine, a New York City taxi dancer, a hopeless romantic, but unlucky in love. It’s one of the most popular musicals in musical theater history, thanks to the choreography of legendary director Bob Fosse and his wife and star Gwen Verdon—Shirley MacLaine played the role in the 1969 movie version—not to mention memorable songs like “Big Spendor” and “If My Friends Could See Me Now. It goes until June 29.
