Based on the critically acclaimed novel by Sandra Cisneros, The House on Mango Street follows 12-year-old Esperanza Cordero throughout a year of her adolescent life as she endures adolescence and the harsh realities of being a young woman in a poor and male-centered neighborhood. It interweaves themes of class, sexuality and identity with compelling depictions of Mexican-American culture. This highly celebrated novel, as a play, provides an extra dimension to the book’s central thesis that while reality can be strong, the dreams of youth can be even stronger. It goes until Saturday, May 17.
