Though not as popular as The Nutcracker, The Snow Queen might be a new dance tradition during the holidays. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s 1844 fairy tale, which in turn inspired Disney’s Frozen, the story follows a young girl named Gerda, who rescues her friend, Kai, after he’s abducted by the evil Snow Queen and taken to her frozen palace. The ballet has been adapted into TV series, animated movies, novels, operas and even video games. Created in 2014, Bayer Ballet’s staging features choreography by founder Inna Bayer, Vasily Medvedev and Stanislav Feco, as well as hand-painted sets, costumes and guest dancers. Performances go until Dec. 20.
