Going Spiral

Pete Campbell in the June 1-7 issue (“Stopping the City’s ‘Death Spiral,'” SanJoseInside) ignores the elephant in the room with his admirable goal of “stopping the city’s death spiral.”

Supporting an empire engaged in multiple never-ending wars is bankrupting the nation both morally and financially. Cutting wages and benefits will not stop the spiraling debt that you and your children must repay but will only speed our decline into a nation of paupers.

Cities and states are teetering on the edge of bankruptcy, and it amazes me that so many people can ignore the obvious solution.

Looking Long

In corporate America, many companies regularly perform process analysis. I suggest the city [of San Jose] might find some great savings by hiring one-time (non-city employee) consultants to look at processes and ways to save money. More pain up front ($$$), but potential long-term gain (savings) later on. We must start looking long term as well as addressing short-term problems.

Pleasing Everyone

Nationally, pensions are a “current” issue in terms of unfunded liability, which allowed political leaders to please everyone at the time they were increasing benefits (lowering retirement ages, etc.) by differing paying for the increases (pay-as-you-go accounting is required with private-sector pension plans, but public-sector officials were shrewd enough to exclude their own shops from that rule.) Anyway, success has a thousand fathers and disaster is an orphan.ÊNo one is going to own this one.
