A theatrical roller coaster delivered through anecdotes, (Un)Documents inspires empathy for the generational pain inflicted by politics. It is the full-length solo show of poet and actor Jesús I. Valles, written largely in response to their brother’s deportation. First debuting in Austin in 2018, collecting multiple awards for Valles’ poetic script work and acting, (Un)Documents journeys across both sides of a river. As Valles moves between languages to find their place as a child, lover, teacher, and sibling, they reexamine their own adolescence, of lying about citizenship, finding queerness within a machismo culture, as underscored by anger and fierce love.
