Kepler’s Books is a great backdrop for a storytelling show, and this version of “Story is the Thing” brings a bevy of talented wordsmiths. Ellen Barker has just written a novel (Nothing North of Delmar), a true coming-of-age tale that involves landlords and urban politics. Portia Elan’s vision is kaleidoscopic and brings needed adventure into the mix. Andrew Lam gets adult with lust, love, and loss among Vietnamese transplants, and Victoria Tatum brings a gritty story full of compromise and betrayal. Authors telling stories in a bookshop is so on the nose, it’s a perfect experience, and there’s the option of taking the stories home and supporting small independent businesses and artists.
