San Joseans can hear the sounds of Seattle-based Polyrhythmics at a free concert in St. James Park this Sunday.

The title might bring to mind the British ruler who commissioned a new translation of the Bible, but Rajiv Joseph’s comic play is instead about the friendship of two men formed upon a shared appreciation of basketball star LeBron James.

As Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass, that “band” (actually the “Wrecking Crew”) released eleven albums between ’62 and ’68; six of those went to #1 on the charts, sometimes even outselling the Beatles.

By mid-August, the quartet was on tour with two dozen dates crisscrossing the Atlantic for dates in the US, South America, Europe and back to the States again.

Drake’s recorded debut was in 2008, but her breakout was 2019’s Everything’s Fine. Two of its songs, the title track and “Wonder,” have each racked up more than seven million plays on Spotify.

This is J Boog’s fourth stop at Music in the Park. His shows have set attendance records, confirming his connection to South Bay communities.

The showcase honors the lowrider community and is an excellent way to celebrate National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Carll has gone on to rack up numerous awards and a Grammy nomination. His latest album, You Get It All, was released in 2021 and featured Carll’s distinctive brand of humor and moving sincerity.
