Having the moniker “The American Songster” sets a pretty high bar, but D.C.-based Dom Flemons has plenty of bona fides to prove it, including a Grammy, two Emmys and his status as 2020 United States Artist Fellow. This Friday, Flemons brings his banjo and harmonica, along with a repertoire of 100-plus years of early American Popular Music, to Stanford’s Bing Studio. There, he’ll perform “Black Cowboys,” a collection of rarely heard tales about the roles Black Americans played in settling the Western U.S. after the Civil War (a theme also present in Jordan Peele’s upcoming film).
