Seeing a singer embody her material as deeply as The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol does puts all other performances into perspective. With roots as a 1960s Bay Area chanteuse, Carol has grown into a genre-crossing vocalist of legendary status, known for her innovative acoustic arrangements of popular songs. Whether drawing on material from her stint touring with Marvin Gaye in the 1970s or duetting with contemporary hip-hop artists, she sparkles with enthusiasm for the diverse traditions of Black music. “We’re doing music, people,” she says. “If you come to see us, you’re going to see a little bit of everything.”
