Casual listeners’ knowledge of Gary Numan’s body of work often doesn’t extend beyond his hit single “Cars,” a track from his 1979 solo debut The Pleasure Principle. And that’s unfortunate, because Numan’s work has been consistently fascinating. He has released 20 solo albums to date, exploring industrial, electronica, metal, goth, and new wave. After years spent below the radar of mass pop culture, Numan roared back in the 21st century with some of the best work of his career. He’s also a dazzling live performer. Potential concertgoers should set aside any notions of the icy, robotic character that gave the world “Cars.”
