John Lee Hooker Jr.

HEIR CONDITIONING: John Lee Hooker Jr. had to really live the blues before he could follow in his father’s footsteps. He plays J.J.’s Saturday

When it comes to the music business, it’s who you know, right? Eh… not always. Having a blues legend for a father couldn’t keep John Lee Hooker Jr. from a life of addiction, jail, and divorce. But he pulled himself back from the edge, going on to record the Grammy-nominated Bstrong>Blues With a Vengeance. He may be the first artist in any genre to win a “Best New Artist Debut” award the same year he won a “Comeback Artist of the Year” award, in 2004. Clearly, Hooker Jr.’s MIA years had left the word extremely confused about the heir to the throne. But he made his comeback complete with 2008’s All Odds Against Me, which snagged him another Grammy nom. His sound mixes his father’s trad blues with the Motown sound of his native Detroit, as showcased vividly on his live album. (SP)
