Goapele was raised in a California community of South African exiles. Raised by politically active parents who instilled in the artist a revolutionary spirit from a young age, her name means “to move forward” in the Setswana language. These words that are reflected in her progressive lyricism and in the neo-soul and trip-hop sounds that define her music. Self-love and social consciousness are at the core of her latest EP, Dreamseeker, wherein the singer-songwriter returns to her roots with soulful tracks like “Power”—a sensual single about reclaiming an individuality “as bright as the sun.”
