If anyone can pair summer and quilting, it’s textile artist Alexander Hernandez. Born in Oaxaca, Mexico, and now based in San Francisco, Hernandez stitches his way toward new understandings of gender roles, queer identity and immigrant experiences. In the rebellious spirit of collage, his new show RETAZOS features unexpected sights from tropical pink leg-shaped pillows to jeans covered in Mexican imagery. As Hernandez says, “I patchwork together domestic fabrics, digitized prints, cultural textiles and pop-cultural artifacts to create Frankensteinian-like work that embraces layers and patterns.”
