Led by its namesake guitarist, Santana broke out nationally in 1969 at Woodstock, fusing Latin textures to rock and soul, with a powerful psychedelic flavor. With that band and on his own, Carlos Santana would go on to an acclaimed and lengthy career, marked by more than two dozen hit albums, 30-plus charting singles, eight Grammy wins (plus three Latin Grammys), and induction in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Fellow Bay Area rockers (and fellow Hall of Famers) the Doobie Brothers have achieved sustained success as well since their launch in 1970, with seven Platinum-or-better albums and more than 30 charting singles.
