John Candy isn’t the most obvious muse for a post-hardcore record, but Sparta has never needed much help finding its own way. Frontman Jim Ward named the band’s latest album, Cut A Silhouette, after hearing Macaulay Culkin describe the impression Candy left on people. Recorded with J. Robbins in seven days, the album finds the El Paso band channeling its familiar urgency into songs about love and connection. Apparently, emotional growth doesn’t require turning the guitars down. Ward, bassist Matt Miller and drummer Neil Hennessy bring that renewed sense of purpose to the Ritz, with Public Opinion opening.
