Since the days of Relient K, Canadian pop punk has been pushing the genre with its production value and songwriting, sometimes outpacing the American bands who originated the style. This north of the border double feature tour sees Chief State and Calling All Captains complementing each other’s sounds. Chief State (whose 2022 LP is on the way) bring shimmering, gentle songs with crooning vocal melodies that create a nostalgic mood. Calling All Captains provides d-beat drumming and throaty shouts over heavy guitar riffs. Together, it’s a blend of sensitivity and aggression that will leave audiences moshing, but wistful.
