Local painter Steven Borelli’s candy colors and bold, heavy shapes make for a body of abstract work that feels paradoxically light-hearted and jarring. Borelli echoes this tone in his bio for the downtown San Jose gallery Kaleid, which states his art career began in the fetal stage: “The inside of his mother’s womb is tattooed with the renderings of his twisted imagination.” The title, too, uses a sense of (word)play to disarm and open the viewer to their own interpretation. Borelli’s solo exhibition opened March 3 and closes this Friday, at the end of the month.
