San Jose Stage launches its 2023-2024 season with Vichet Chum’s latest play Bald Sisters, which takes on a particular brand of sibling rivalry that any two sisters will understand. When Him and Sophea lose their mother, they are forced to confront a flood of interpersonal issues they’ve been avoiding for years, from childhood grievances to quandaries surrounding their Cambodian heritage. Critics have praised the play for its subtle handling of the well-worn theme of family dysfunction as well as its bold humor and big heart. There’s also a surreal twist that will motivate any pair of fighting sisters to make amends sooner rather than later.
